CCSD 89 blood drives
Upcoming blood drives
The district will host blood drives from 2 to 6:30 p.m. at Glen Crest on the following dates:
- May 12, 2021
- August 25, 2021
- November 3, 2021
With more local permanent blood centers closing, Glen Crest Middle School, 725 Sheehan Avenue, Glen Ellyn, has become a regular host site for Versiti Blood Center of Illinois blood drives.
Versiti Blood Center of Illinois provides blood to hospitals across the country. According to Versiti, a blood donation is needed every two seconds in the United States. Cancer patients can need up to 8 units of blood each month.
The impact of each blood donation is multiplied. When Versiti collects blood, most of the time that pint can be separated to help up to three patients. One patient may get the red blood cells, one may get the plasma, and one the platelets.
The blood drives are held in the cafeteria of the school. Appointments are appreciated.
The process for donating
Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation, and refreshments. The actual blood donation takes about 10 to 12 minutes. The entire process - from arrival to exit - takes about an hour.
Donors can speed up the process by using VersiPASS, which allows them to fill out basic medical screening questions from their phone the morning of their donation. You can learn more about VersiPASS here: http://www.versiti.org/versipass/illinois
It is recommended that a donor eat something within four hours prior to donation.
Who can donate
The blood drive is open to anyone in the community.
A photo ID is required to donate. You need to be at least 17 years old and in good health. (Sixteen-year-olds can donate with parent permission.) You must weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated blood for at least eight weeks. To determine if you are eligible to donate, contact Versiti Blood Centers of Illinois at (800) 786-4483.
